Ci-dessus : Union Jack. Jack signifie pavillon.
Above: the Union Jack. The flag includes the 4 flags composing the United Kingdom: England, Scotland and Northern Ireland (it was made official on January 1st, 1801 although created in 1606). The flag from Wales is missing as this province was included to the UK only in the 17th century. Jack comes for the English navy jargon. Jack means flag.
It's time to take the ferry to go visit our friends, the British. Time to cross : 6 hours. Even if the weather is not great, the sea is calm. We are supposed to leave at 10:15 am to arrive at 2:45pm (one hour difference between England and France). The motorcycle is strapped. The boat is not full. In fact, the ferry looks more like a cruise boat with its restaurants, its decoration, its stores, its pool and its 2 scenic lifts with panoramic views.

No problem during the crossing and we arrive on time. Easy to enter the UK and here we are off on the roads of our English friends. Riding on the left is sometimes challenging namely in the round-abouts. In addition, some roads are just tiny and I was happy to have some good brakes. The roads of Cornwall look more like roads in Ireland. And I thought I had seen the worst on the roads of Mexico and Guatemala. You need to watch out constantly here as well : a sudden stop, a tractor, a lorry (this is how they say truck here) or even a bicycle can be a serious obstacle.

Our next stop will be in Barnstaple, small town with no real charm but with a good location to reach Exmoor National Park. To end our first day, we decide to ride to Clovelly on the Celtic Sea.
You cannot reach this village by car or by motorcycle. You need to walk there from the parking lot after having paid a 7.75 pounds fee per person. Rated 2 stars on our Michelin guide, the village was built on an abrupt slope and goes down to a small fishing port which dates back to the 14th century. No wonder that the few inhabitants who live there call High Street or ''down-a-long'' or ''up-a-long'' (depending which direction you are heading towards) the main street and almost unique one.

Wednesday, June 26: The weather is not at its best, but we may not get any rain. As scheduled, we leave to explore the Exmoor National Park. However, before some short stops in a few villages: Croyden, then Woolacombe, Ilfracombe, Lynmouth. These 4 villages belong to the Devon County. Pollock and Dunster are 2 other villages located in Somerset.

Cornwall: we go there to see its wild beauty, its small fishermen villages nested in deep coves and its gardens. The Coast of North Devon will enjoy every tourist with its spectacular cliffs, its incredible coves and its marvelous villages like Dunster who are hundreds of years old.

We are back in time and we try to imagine what life was like in the 14th century. The houses have so much charm that we take the time to stop, relax and soak ourselves in the atmosphere.

If the charm operates when the sky is grey and when it's windy like today, let's imagine what it would be like if we had had a sunny day. Still full of mystery, I bet that these stones will keep their secrets for ever. After all, isn't King Arthur a legend ?

I need to mention that the roads have varying widths, sometimes very narrow allowing only one car at a time, very curvy too in stunning sceneries. From time to time, it's very steep as well: 25% degrees...

Alderbury, small village close to Salisbury will be our venture point for 3 days. We will start with Stonehenge. In our B&B, at Catherine's, we felt just like at home. Nice atmosphere and aperitive on the program. Like Carnac in Brittany, Stonehenge has always been fascinating to me, and was on my never ending bucket list.

Listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO, Stonehenge still keeps its secrets. Its meaning is still an enigma. It's also the most famous pre-historical site of England. Its construction may have started 2950 years BC. What was its purpose : ceremonial grounds, astronomical observatory, nobody really knows. One thing is sure: people are coming here from around the world.

New Forest National Park, (571 km2), not very far from Salisbury is famous because of William the Conqueror. After destroying 36 parishes, he had a forest planted to hunt, close to the castle of Winchester. Nowadays, it's protected and it allows dozens of horses, donkeys, deers to live peaceful and the traffic does not bother any of these animals used to live away from rifles. Apparently, it's also where Lewis Caroll would have found his inspiration of Alice in Wonderland. Below the grave of Reginal Hargreaves Alice in Alice in Wonderland.
