From Darwin to Alice Springs (Australia) - September 2018

Finalement, nous resterons 3 jours, 4 nuits à Darwin dans un studio ce qui nous permettra de nous reposer. Oui, j’ai bien dit reposer dans un vrai lit avec un peu de confort, notre propre douche, frigidaire et de quoi faire un peu plus à manger que d’habitude. Le luxe, quoi !

In the end, we will stay 3 days, 4 nights in Darwin living in a studio which will enable us to rest. Yes, we really needed a rest in a real bed with some comfort, with our own shower, fridge and a little bit more dishes to cook. Luxury !

A Darwin, il fait effectivement plus de 35 degrés. Darwin nous fait penser un peu à Hawaï avec un mélange de Vancouver. L'ambiance y est sympa avec ses parcs qui bordent la mer. Darwin est une ville moderne, faut dire que Tracy lui a donné un sacré coup de...vent. En 1974, tard dans la soirée de Noël, L'ouragan Tracy avec des vents allant jusqu'à 280 km/h a détruit quasiment la totalité de la ville. Darwin a mis du temps à s’en remettre.

In Darwin, the temperature is above 35 degrees. It reminds us a little bit of Hawaii with a hint of Vancouver. The atmosphere is pleasant with its parks along the sea. Darwin is a modern city. It is true that Tracy gave it a wipe… In 1974, late on Christmas Eve, Tracy Hurricane with winds up to 280 km per hour has destroyed almost all of the city. It took some time to the city to recover.

Ici, on prend son temps et on prend soin de soi, beaucoup de coureurs le matin le long de l’esplanade. Il y aussi une cinquantaine d'ethnies différentes qui se côtoient tous les jours incluant les aborigènes.

Here, people seem to be taking their time and taking care of themselves, many runners in the morning along the Esplanade. There are also about 50 different ethnies who live together including the aborigenes.

Parmi les visites qui nous ont plu, ici à Darwin, j’aimerais noter le « Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory" incluant une collection d'art aboriginal considérée comme la meilleure au monde.

We really enjoyed visiting the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory including one of the best collection of aboriginal art in the world.

Nous avons fait aussi une visite guidée du "George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens » qui contient notamment 8 sortes de baobabs différents.

We also went for a guided walk through the ‘’George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardents’’ which proudly includes 8 sorts of Baobabs.

Nous avons aussi pris le temps de nous amuser comme des gamins dans la piscine à vagues du centre ville, piscine ou la température atteignait aussi les 30 degrés. Ici, comme beaucoup d'endroits, pas moyen de se baigner dans la mer.

And, like kids, we took the time to enjoy the wave pool downtown with a temperature in the thirties. Here, like many places, no way you should swim in the sea.

Finalement, notre visite de Darwin s’est achevée jeudi le 20 septembre par une ballade au marché Mindlin ou on a l’impression que c’est la sortie de la semaine et que les habitants de Darwin se donnent rendez-vous pour flâner, pour regarder les différents kiosques de produits locaux divers et surtout pour goûter à différentes spécialités culinaires de nombreuses natiionalités présentes à Darwin (Australien avec hamburger au kangourou, Thaï, chinois, indien… et même un kiosque français avec raclette traditionnelle).

Our visit of Darwin finished on Thursday, September 20 with a walk to the Mindlin market. It feels like it is the weekly outing for the inhabitants of Darwin who meet there to shop at one of the many local kiosks and will taste one of the different culinary specialities of the many nationalities represented on the market (Australian with kangoroo hamburgers, Thai, Chinese, Indian… and even a French booth with traditional ‘’raclette’’ (melting cheese).

Nous avons repris la route maintenant en direction de Uluru et notre première étape nous amène au Lichtfield National Park. qui nous a été recommandé. Comme d’habitude, nous nous mettons en quête d’un camping et après visite au centre d’information local, nous nous arrêtons au Pandanus Caravan Park. Pas cher, $ 26… le meilleur… Ouais, c’était supposé être le meilleur. On s’est étonné d’être tout seul mais on a vite compris pourquoi : cuisine du camp très sale, désordonnée et à la limite de la salubrité. Ceci dit, l’accueil des gens locaux qui vivaient dans ce camp était chaleureux et ils nous ont affirmé que vivre ici était pour eux le paradis sur terre. Comme quoi, tout est question de perspective !

We are now on the Road Again towards Uluru and our first stop takes us to Lichtfield National Park. As usual, we look for a campground and after visiting the local information center, we stop at the Pandanus Caravan Park. Not expensive, $ 26… the best! Well, it was supposed to be the best. We were surprised to be the only tourists there but we quickly understood why: kitchen of the camp extremely dirty and messy close to be not salubre. This being said, the welcome of the local people living there was extraordinary and they were adamant that living here was paradise for them. Everything is a matter of perspective !

Au Lichtfield National Park, nous avons pu voir des termitières géantes et aussi, une particularité pour certaines qui sont plates car orientées nord sud pour limiter l'exposition au soleil. Nous avons aussi appris que 3 quarts des termites vivent non pas dans les termitières mais soit dans le sol ou dans les arbres. Cela parait assez incroyable vu les millions de termitières que nous voyons en chemin. Elles ont aussi une durée de vie qui peut aller jusqu’à 80 ans.

In the Lichtfield National Park, we have seen giant termit mounts. Many of them are also flat and directed north to south to limit their exposure to the sun. We have learnt that three quarters of termits do not live in termit mounts but either in the ground or in the trees. This seems incredible when you think about the million of termit mounts we have seen on the way. Termit mounts can survive up to 80 years.

Petite baignade à Wangi Falls et promenade à Florence Falls. On décide de repartir vers Uluru dès le lendemain. 1500 kms nous attendent avant d’arriver à Alice Springs.

Short dip in the Wangi Falls and walk to the Florence Falls. We decide to leave and head to Uluru the following day. 1500 kms are waiting for us before arriving to Alice Springs.
