Mexico, les 3 premiers jours - the first 3 days (February 23, 24 & 25, 2019)

Et voilà, c'est parti pour le Mexique (1 973 000 kms carré, plus de 3 fois la superficie de la France avec environ 130 millions d'habitants). Nous retrouvons les membres du Club de BMW à l'hôtel à San Antonio et après les dernières recommandations pour le passage de la frontière au Mexique et le plein d'essence, nous nous mettons en route pour la frontière. Un peu long le passage, car le système informatique ''crashe'' quand on arrive. Toutefois, après deux heures, tout le monde a fait les formalités d'importation temporaire des motos. Nous sommes donc 6 motos au total et une voiture à suivre une partie de l'itinéraire concocté par Frédéric, le président du Club BMW Montréal.

Here we are: on the Road to Mexico (1,973,000 square kms, more than 3 times the size of France with about 130 million inhabitants). We meet with the members of the BMW Club in the hotel in San Antonio and after the last recommendations to cross the Mexican border and after filling up, we head out to the border. A little longer than expected as the IT system crashes when we arrive. However, after 2 hours, everybody has completed the temporary importation formalities of the motorcycles. Our group is made of 6 motorcycles and one car which will follow the itinerary prepared by Frederic, the President of the BMW Club of Montreal.

Première journée, très longue, 550 kms et nous arrivons vers 18h à l'hôtel à Saltillo. Il fallait en passer par là. Toutefois, les premiers grands paysages sont magnifiques et le midi, nous nous arrêtons dans un petit restaurant mexicain. Sur l'autoroute, accident de camion et aussi, on perd pendant quelques minutes l'un des motards.

First day, very long, 550 kms and we arrive at 6pm at the hotel in Saltillo. We knew this was going to happen. However, the first scenery is stunning, and at lunch, we stopped in our first Mexican restaurant. On the freeway, truck accident and for a few minutes, we loose one of the motorcycle rider.

Premiers paysages mexicains - first views in Mexico

Deuxième journée, pleines d'aventures, deux chutes, Michel dont les pneus sont neufs qui a glissé dans un virage. De mon côté, j'ai penché aussi dans un virage et  le dessous de la béquille a accroché la route car j'ai une suspension surbaissée. Heureusement, pour les deux, plus de peur que de mal. Michel n'a rien, sauf quelques égratignures à sa moto, une BMW 1600. J'ai la main gauche un peu enflée et le pare-brise est cassé, mais avec quelques morceaux de scotch (tape), le tour est joué et on reprend la route !

Second day, full of events, 2 of us fell down. Michel, whose tires are new and who slipped in a curve. On my side, I leant on the left in a curve and the side stand touched the road because I have a lower frame. Luckily, for both of us, just a little scare but nothing serious. Michel is not hurt and only has a few scratches on his motorbike, a BMW 1600. My left hand is swollen and the windshield is broken, but with a few pieces of scotch tape, it's fixed and we are On the Road Again !

... Ceci étant dit, la matinée nous a  emmené sur des toutes petites routes de montagne dont la beauté est à couper le souffle, ça monte, ça descend, ça tourne raide, très raide, même mais on y va tranquillement et tout va bien. On arrive dans un magnifique canyon.

This being said, the day took us on very narrow and stunning mountain roads: we rode up, down, we have a few hairpins, it's steep, very steep at time, but I go slow and everything goes well. We arrive in a magnificent canyon.

En fin de journée, après avoir fait environ 480 kms, voila la surprise du jour : 20 kms à faire sur une route de cailloux pour arriver au village de Real de Catorce. Tout le monde n'a qu'une hâte, c'est d'arriver et poser les valises. Nous sommes fatigués.

At the end of the day, after about 480 kms, surprise, surprise ! 20 kms on a stone road to arrive to the village of Real de Catorce. Everyone is eager to arrive and set the bags down. We are tired.

20 kms de petits cailloux - 20 kms of a stony road

Le village est situé à 2600 mètres d'altitude, c'est tout simplement splendide. Pour atteindre le village, il nous faut traverser un tunnel de plus d'un kilomètre de long, qui est en fait une ancienne mine creusée à la main. L'hôtel est plein de charme et le petit restaurant ou nous allons manger est aussi magnifique. Vu l'altitude, il ne fait pas très chaud, dans les 10 degrés.

The village is located at about 2600 meters high, it's just magnificent. We need to go through a tunnel which is over 1 km long (a former mine) to reach the village. The hotel and the restaurant where we will have supper are charming. Because of the altitude, the temperature is fairly cold, about 10 degrees.

Le nom original de Real de Catorce était ''Real de Alamos de la Purisima Concepcion de Los Catorce'' mais fut renommé à cause de 14 soldats espagnols tués dans une embuscade par les guerriers Chichmeca. La ville fut fondée officiellement en 1779, sept ans après la découverte d'argent. A la fin du 19e siècle, Real de Catorce avait une population dans les 15000 habitants. Après les années 1900, la ville fut presque complètement abandonnée du fait de la chute des cours d'argent. Actuellement, le revenu principal de ses habitants est le tourisme et l'influx annuel de pèlerins pour voir une image miraculeuse de St-Francis dans l'église.

Plusieurs films célèbres ont aussi été filmés ici incluant Bandidos (avec Salma Hayek et Penelope Cruz), The Mexican (avec Brad Pitt et Julia Roberts).

Real de Catorce original name was “Real de Álamos de la Purísima Concepción de los Catorce” but was named for 14 Spanish soldiers killed in an ambush by the Chichimeca warriors. The town was officially founded in 1779 seven years after silver was discovered in 1772.  Real de Catorce’ s had a population of 15,000 in the late 19th century with some of Mexico's richest silver mines, a mint, shops selling European luxury goods etc... The town was almost completely abandoned when the silver prices plummeted after 1900; Today some people remained in this ghost town with their main income comes from the tourist and the annual influx of pilgrims to a reputedly miraculous image of St. Francis in the parish church.

Several major commercial motion pictures have been filmed in Real including Bandidos (featuring Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz), The Mexican (featuring Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts.

Nous descendons en Jeep visiter une ancienne mine d'argent. La route est encore une fois tout en cailloux, étroite et descend à pic. C'est l'aventure ! nous voici perchés sur le toit de la Jeep.
We ride in a jeep to go to an old silver mine. Once again, only stones on the road, very narrow and incredibly steep. It's an adventure ! We climb on the top of the Jeep.

L'après midi, nous allons visiter un village fantôme à cheval au dessus du village et la vue est absolument magnifique.

In the afternoon, we go visit a ghost town with horses on top of the village and the view is jawdropping !
