Matera vaut bien sa propre publication tellement nous avons aimé ! Matera is worth its own posting as we loved it so much !
Matera, considérée comme une des plus vieilles villes du monde, inscrite au Patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO en 1993 et annoncée Capitale européenne de la culture en 2019, possède tous les atouts pour plaire. Et pour plaire, cela nous a plu. Un vrai coup de coeur pour nous ! On s'y sent vraiment bien et quelle splendeur quand on arrive sur la place principale pour aller voir le panorama sur les Sassi (habitations troglodytiques) on n'a pas pu s'empêcher de laisser échapper un wow d'admiration. Toutes les photos que nous avons pu faire ne rendront pas justice à cette ville. S'il y a un endroit à ne manquer en Italie, c'est Matera ! Matera, considered one of the oldest cities in the world, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and announced European Capital of Culture in 2019, has all the assets to please. And we really loved it ! You really feel good in this city and when you arrive on the Piazza to go check out the Sassi (troglodytique dwellings), we could withhold an admirative Wow ! All the pictures we took in this city won't give you the right idea of this city. If there is one city not to be missed in Italy, it is Matera !
Au cours des années 50, le Cuccu était l'objet le plus désiré de tous les enfants et suscitait l'envie de tous ceux qui ne l'auraient jamais. Mais autrefois, le cuccu avait eu des fonctions différentes. Jadis, il était considéré comme un objet apte à éloigner les esprits malins qui hantaient les maisons, et était donc un symbole de bonheur et de sérénité. Il devient au fil du temps le symbole de la fertilité et on la donnait aux époux le jour de leur mariage. Aujourd'hui, ce sifflet s'est transformé en objet décoratif pour maisons. In the 1950s, the cuccu was the object of desire for all children and provoked envy to many others would never own one. Une ville à découvrir sans modération mais surtout hors des périodes estivales pour éviter la foule. Nous avons passé 3 jours à parcourir ce joyau sublimé aussi par les cinéastes, notamment Mel Gibson. A city to discover without moderation but especially outside the summer periods to avoid the crowds. We spent 3 days exploring this gem, which has also been enhanced by filmmakers, notably Mel Gibson.
Ici, on monte où on descend et pour cause, Matera est construite sur un plateau caillouteux surplombant la "Gravina" ou profond ravin. Nous avons parcouru plus entre 15 kms et 20 kms à pied chaque jour pour explorer les petites rues et voir tous les panoramas sur la ville. Here, you go up where you go down and for good reason, Matera is built on a stony plateau overlooking the "Gravina" or deep ravine. We walked between 15 kms and 20 kms each day to explore the small streets of the city or to see all the views over the city.
Matera fut considérée en 1950 comme une "honte nationale" par Alcide De Gasperi, président du conseil quand il découvrit l'extrême misère et insalubrité dans lequel vivaient 18000 de ses habitants. Les sassi, ces quartiers aux habitations troglodytiques à flanc de ravin, ont été pendant des siècles. Matera was considered in 1950 as a "national disgrace" by Alcide De Gasperi, president of the council when he discovered the extreme misery and insalubrity in which 18,000 of its inhabitants lived. The sassi, these neighborhoods with troglodyte dwellings on the side of the ravine, have been there for centuries.
Entre 1952 et 1968, ces habitants ont été relogés non sans mécontentement. Matera s'est donc vidée de ses habitants et est devenue une ville fantôme jusque dans les années 1980. Aujourd'hui, plus de 4000 habitants y vivent grâce à l'octroi de concession de la ville pour une durée de 30 ans et redonnent vie à cet ensemble unique au monde. La ville qui elle-même obtint une concession de 99 ans pour la totalité des habitations des sassi , concession offerte par l'état italien puisqu'il en est maintenant propriétaire. Tout le charme de la ville se trouve dans cet enchevêtrement de ruelles, d'escalier de pierre par dizaines, de passages parsemés de voûtes. All the charm of the city is in this tangle of alleys, dozens of stone staircases, passages dotted with vaults.

Nous visitons une maison troglodytique typique, La Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario. La famille qui y habitait l'a quitté en 1956. Les familles avaient environ 6 enfants chacune à cette époque. La nuit, la maison était tellement petite que le tiroir de la commode du bas servait de lit pour le petit dernier. Après la visite, on réalise mieux effectivement l'insalubrité dans laquelle on vivait à l'époque même si la reconstitution des lieux y donnerait un certain cachet ! We visit a typical troglodytic house, the Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario The family who lived there left it in 1956. The families had about 6 kids at the time. At night, the house was so small that the baby of the family was sleeping in the bottom drawer of the chest. After the visit, we understand better the insanitary conditions in which people were living at the time, although the visit would make it look like it was cozy ! |

| Le lit était assez haut et il n'était pas rare d'avoir des poules dessous. Quant à la table, assez petite, on y dressait un plat dessus et chacun se servait directement dans le plat. The bed was fairly high and very often, the chickens were below. As for the table, it was fairly small, the dish was set on it and everyone helped oneself directly in the bowl. |
Visite du Palombaro Lungo, une immense citerne creusée à partir du 16e siècle. Elle a été créée par la municipalité de Matera pour conserver les eaux de source, présentes en abondance. Absolument fascinant et incroyable de penser que son existence avait été complètement oublié. Elle a été retrouvé par hasard lors de travaux de rénovation de la place au dessus! Visit of the Palombaro Lungo, a huge water cistern, entirely dug in the rock starting in the sixteenth century. It was dug by the Municipality of Matera to store the spring waters, which are abundant in this area. Absolutely fascinating and incredible to think that its existence had been completely forgotten. It was found by chance when the city wanted to renovate the square located above it !
Petite pause pour le déjeuner, gnocchis a la tomate et haricots mélangés avec des épinards, pas mauvais. Le café, un macchiato, un café hyper serré avec un nuage de lait ! Bref, même en buvant votre café à 13 heures, vous êtes assurés de ne pas fermer l'oeil ! Short break for lunch, tomato gnocchis and beans with spinachs, fairly good. As for the coffee, a strong small coffee with a cloud of milk ! Even if you drink it at lunch, you are sure not to sleep the following night !
Parmi les nombreux sites à voir, on ne peut pas manquer les églises rupestres (chiese rupestri). Interdiction de faire des photos à l'intérieur. Les peintures sont encore très belles dans les différentes églises visitées. Among the many sights to see, we could not miss the rock churches (chiese rupestri). Forbidden to take pictures inside. The paintings are still very beautiful in the churches we visited.
Pour les plus courageux, on peut même descendre jusqu'en bas du ravin et remonter sur l'autre rive pour découvrir Matera et y découvrir une vue d'ensemble spectaculaire et c'est évidement ce que nous avons fait. For the bravest, you can even go down to the bottom of the ravine and go up on the other side to discover Matera and discover a spectacular overview. Of course, we had to do this.

et Matera de nuit, pas mal non plus, même si les photos ne sont pas terribles ! And Matera by night, not bad at all either, even if the pictures are not the best !
