Première journée passée à Manille et je dois dire que nous sommes excités et heureux de retrouver l'Asie, ses odeurs, sa circulation, ses bruits de klaxon et sa population diverse, attentionnée et gentille. Beaucoup de marche aujourd'hui pour prendre de plus près le pouls de la ville malgré les sollicitations multiples des tuktuks dans la rue qui voulait nous conduire dans leur ''Lamborghini''. Au niveau de la température, heureusement que nous sommes passés par l'Australie, car cela nous a habitué à la chaleur. Toutefois, c'est beaucoup plus humide, alors aujourd'hui, la priorité a été donnée ce matin à trouver un supermarché pour acheter de l'eau. Notre hôtel se trouve dans le quartier de Ermita et bien que l'environnement ne paraisse pas très riche, nous nous sentons très bien, les chambres quoique assez petites sont impeccablement propres avec une WIFI qui marche bien. Nous sommes aussi situés pratiquement en face de l'Ambassade des Etats-Unis et à environ deux ou trois kilomètres de Manille Intra-Muros.

First day spent in Manila and I must say that we are excited and happy to be back in Asia with its odours, its traffic, its honking and its diverse population, friendly and caring. Lots of walking today to better feel the city despite the multiple solicitation of the tuktuks who wanted to take us for a ride in their tuktuks, their ''Lamborghinis''. Concerning the temperature, we are glad that we went through Australia as we are now used to the heat. However, it is much more humid, therefore today, our priority was to find a supermarket to buy water. Our hotel is located in the Ermita neighborhood and although it does not look very rich, we feel good. The bedrooms although a little bit small are impeccably clean with a good WIFI. We are located almost across the United States Ambassy and about 2-3 kilometers of Manila Intra-Muros.

Il va falloir se ré-habituer au petit déjeuner en Asie - we are going to have to get used again to this type of breakfast in Asia.

Circulation à Manille - traffic

Rizal Park ci-dessous avec monument dédié au Dr José Rizal. José Rizal a été exécuté à 35 ans. Il a contribué à forger l'identité nationale des philippins. En 35 ans, il parlait 22 langues, créa un mouvement politique (La Liga Filipina), écrit 2 romans, fut un docteur en ophthalmologie et était aussi un artiste accompli (peintre et sculpteur).
Rizal Park below with the Dr. Jose Rizal Monument. Jose Rizal was executed at the age of 35 years old. He is responsible for forging the Filipino identity. In 35 years old, he managed to speak 22 languages, found a political movement (La Liga Filipina), write two novels, became a doctor in ophthalmology and was also an accalimed artist (painter and sculptor)

Fort Santiago est situé près de la rivière Pasig. C'est ici aussi que fut incarcéré Dr Jose Rizal avant son éxécution en 1896.

Fort Santiago is located at the entrance of the Pasig River. It's also where Dr Jose Rizal was incarcerated as he awaited his execution in 1896.

La cathédrale de Manille a été reconstruite 7 fois, la dernière fois en 1951 suite à sa destruction durant la seconde guerre mondiale.
Manila Cathedral was rebuilt seven times, most recently in 1951 following the destruction in WWII.

Jeepney à Manille, le bus local- Jeepney in Manila, the local bus

Deuxième journée tout aussi fatigante qu'hier à parcourir Manille. Le programme d'aujourd'hui était Chinatown et la visite du cimetière catholique chinois.  Première expérience, prendre un Jeepney, une sorte de bus local très prisé des philippins et toujours plein. Il y en a des centaines. Faire signe au chauffeur de s'arrêter, monter par derrière du Jeepney, t'assoir collé serré à ton voisin, faire passer ton billet à tes voisins pour qu'ils le donnent au chauffeur, que la monnaie te revienne et attendre qu'on te dise ou descendre. Tout le monde est très sympathique et prêt à t'aider. Nous payons 18 pesos ($0.45 ou environ 0.30 Euros) pour faire environ 4-5 kilomètres dans une circulation intense. Tu descends au milieu de la rue et tu fais attention de ne pas te faire écraser pour atteindre le trottoir, s'il y en a un.
Second day in Manila as tiring as yesterday, walking the streets of Manila. The program of today was going to Chinatown and the visit of the Chinese Catholic cemetery. Our first experience to take a Jeepney, the local bus. Filipinos use it constantly, they are always full and hundreds of them.  Wave the driver to stop, climb in the back of the Jeepney, sit really close to your neighbor as there is no room anyway, hand out your bank note to your neighbour who will pass it along to the driver, get your change back and wait until someone tells you where to go down. Everybody is nice and willing to help. We pay 18 pesos ($0.45 or approximately 0.30 Euros) to ride about 4-5 kms in the heavy traffic. You climb down in the middle of the street and need to pay attention to reach the sidewalk, if there is one.

On arrive finalement à Chinatown après s'être trompé en descendant du Jeepney et déjà avoir marché pas mal en zigzagant parfois sur la rue, parfois sur le trottoir en enjambant trous, gravats, obstacles en tous genres. Il faut faire attention ou tu marches, c'est parfois presque dangereux et il faut avouer que nous ne sommes pas dans un quartier privilégié de Manille. La très grande pauvreté est plus qu'évidente un peu partout. Des gens très sales qui dorment dans la rue un peu partout sur des cartons ou à même le sol parfois, des personnes agées qui quémandent ou qui vendent des broutilles pour essayer de gagner quelques pesos. Les  chiens ou chats qui n'appartiennent à personne sont souvent galeux ou semblent porter puces et autres maladies. Nous avions déjà connu la pauvreté durant notre voyage précédent mais nous ne nous y habituons pas. la misère côtoie l'opulance vraiment de très près. A Manille, comme toute grande capitale, il y a des centres commerciaux un peu partout extrêmement luxueux avec tout le confort auquel le monde occidental est habitué. 

We finally arrive in Chinatown although we took the wrong way after getting off from the Jeepney. We have already walked quite a lot, zigzaging sometime on the street, sometimes on the sidewalk, climbing over holes, construction materials, all kinds of obstacles. You need to pay attention where you walk. It's almost dangerous. It must be said that we are not in a priviledged area of Manila. The poverty is almost everywhere. Very dirty people sleep almost everywhere, sometimes on cardboard sheets sometimes directly on the floor. Elderly people ask for money or try to sell knick knacks to try to earn a few pesos. The dogs and cats who don't belong to anyone are very often mangy  and flees or other diseases. We had already known the misery but we cannot get used to it. Poverty goes side by side with rich people. In Manila, like many capitals, there are malls extremely luxurious with all the comfort the occidental world is used to.

Nous avons aussi pris le train de banlieue et finalement avons réussi à trouver le cimetière catholique chinois. Nous décidons d'engager un guide pour nous faire visiter ce cimetière particulier de 54 hectares. Ce sont en général des concessions de 25 ans. Pour chaque concession, il y a un employé qui s'occupe de l'entretien 3 fois par semaines mais quelquefois tous les jours.
We also take the commuter train and finally managed to find the Chinese Catholic cemetery. We decide to hire a guide to visit this special cemetary of 54 ha. The concessions typically last 25 years. For each concession, the owner hires a caretaker who will come usually about 3 times a week, but sometimes every day.

Ci-dessus, mausolée de la Maison Blanche avec air conditionné mis en route 2-3 fois par an quand la famille vient. Appartient à une famille propriétaire d'une grande entreprise qui fabrique de l'acier à Manille.

Nous ne restons que deux jours à Manille, nous n'aurons donc pas le temps d'aller visiter d'autres quartiers. Longue journée dans la chaleur et l'humidité mais mémorable néanmoins. On a fini par une petite promenade le long de la baie ou Pompom a fait des essais photos !
We are staying only 2 days in Manila and will therefore not have time to visit other neighborhoods. Long day in the heat and humidity but a couple of days that we will remember. We ended our day along the Manila Bay where Pompom tried different picture effects !

Demain, on part sur l'ile de Palawan à El Nido...
Tomorrow, we leave on the Island of Palawan to El Nido...
