El Nido et Port Barton (ile de Palawan, Philippines - January 2019

Nous voici donc arrivés sur l'île de Palawan, à El Nido, au Nord de l'ile. Notre avion avait 3 heures de retard au départ de Manille. Le paradis se fait attendre. L'arrivée au très petit aéroport privé de El Nido est bien organisée. Nous récupérons nos sacs rapidement et embarquons dans un tricycle, direction la Résidence Raje à 900 mètres du village. La chambre est petite, un peu sombre, chaude et humide. Nous mettons la vieille climatisation en route et on sait déjà qu'il faudra sortir les bouchons d'oreilles pour dormir. On a besoin d'un petit remontant après cette longue journée de voyage...

We have now arrived on Palawan Island, in El Nido, on the Northern part of the island. Our plane was 3 hours late leaving from Manila. One has to wait for paradise. The arrival at the very small private airport in El Nido is well organized. We get our bags quickly and climb into a tricycle towards the Raje Residence about 900 meters from the village. The room is small, a little bit dark and humid. We put the old air conditioning on and we already know that we will need air plugs to sleep. We need a drink after this day of travel...

Programme farniente pour les prochains jours. Effectivement, les plages notamment celles de Nacpan et Lio sont idylliques, l'eau très chaude et transparente. Photos de cartes postales.
Rest is on the program for the next few days. The beaches, and namely those of Nacpan and Lio are idyllic, the water very warm and clear. Postal cards pictures.

Nous louons un scooter pendant 3 jours pour nous rendre aux plages et visiter les environs. La promenade devient assez épique quand nous ne savons plus très bien par où passer ou que la route se transforme en chemin de pierre cahoteux avec des ponts en bois qui nous paraissent fragiles. Aucun autre touriste par la, les locaux que nous croisons sont souriants avec les enfants qui nous saluent au passage.

We rent a scooter for 3 days to reach some beaches and to tour the surroundings. The ride becomes epic once we don't really know where to go or when the path becomes a trail with stones and wooden bridges that seem very fragile. No tourists there, the locals that we meet are smiling and the kids wave at us when we drive by.

Mais il y a aussi l'envers du décor à El Nido. Tout n'est pas joli, joli. Les touristes font que les hôtels, Bed and Breakfast, pensions en tout genre, resto et cafés poussent un peu partout. Le service dans les hotels, cafés et resto est très souvent médiocre, voir mauvais. On n'en a donc pas toujours pour son argent. Les gravats s'amoncellent dans les rues, les routes sont commencées et donnent l'impression quelquefois qu'elles resteront ainsi jusqu'au prochain budget. Bref, un peu décevant alors que le cadre est absolument splendide.

However, not everything is pretty in El Nido. Because of the tourists, hotels, bed and breakfasts, inns of all kinds, restaurants and coffee shops are mushrooming almost everywhere in the bay. The service in hotels, coffee and restaurants is often mediocre, and even bad. No good value there ! and the construction debris are sprawling in the streets, the roads seem that they will not be finished until next budget. A little bit disappointing although the scenery is still stunning.

Finalement, on s'est mis en route pour Port Barton. Encore un voyagement assez long en van (près de 4 heures). Ce n'est pas très loin de El Nido, environ 150 kms vers le sud. La route est très sinueuse, les paysages magnifiques et parfois avec beaucoup de travaux. On s'est trouvé une petite résidence en bambous, avec moustiquaire et salle de bain assez neuve. On y rencontre beaucoup de français et notamment Francis et Maryse avec qui nous passerons une agréable soirée dans un petit restau sur la plage avant notre départ pour Puerto Princessa. Séjour encore très relax, une journée sur une plage appelée Plage Blanche dans un hamac à bouquiner et l'autre journée, expédition bateau et plongée en apnée. On ne se plaint pas, c'est très tranquille ici, beaucoup moins de touristes et les locaux sont vraiment très gentils. On serait bien restés un peu plus longtemps, mais nous sommes à court de cash (ici, tout se paie cash, même l'hôtel) et aucun distributeur de billets dans ce village.
After a few days in El Nido, we took the road for Port Barton. Another long trip in a van (almost 4 hours). It's really not that far from El Nido, about 150 kms south. The road is windy and stunning with many works on the way. We found a small guest house with cabins in bambous, with a moskito net in lieu of air conditioning and an almost brand new bathroom. We meet many French people there. Happy to meet Francis and Maryse with whom we will spend a lovely evening in a restaurant on the beach prior to leaving to Puerto Princessa. Very relaxing stay, one day on the white beach in a hamac busy reading and the other day spent on a boat and snorkelling. We are not complaining, it's very quiet here, less tourists and the locals are very keen to help you out, if you need anything. We would have liked to stay a little bit longer but we are too short in cash (and here everything is paid by cash, even the hotel) and no ATM in this village.
