Changement de décor complet aujourd'hui avec le Mont Saint-Michel. Tout d'abord, il fait super beau, ciel bleu et température de 4 degrés. C'est vrai, c'est pas la grosse chaleur mais on se console quand on compare aux températures actuelles au Québec de -20 environ. Complete change of scenery today with the Mont Saint-Michel. First of all, the weather is on our side, blue sky with 4 degrees. It may not be super hot, but we are happy when we compare to the temperature of Quebec today of around minus 20.
Pas de course à pied aujourd'hui, alors, nous prenons la route vers 9h30 pour Beauvoir ou nous stationnons notre voiture. 4.5 kms de marche avec une vue progressive sur le Mont Saint-Michel. Nous étions venus ici il y a environ 22 ans. Nos enfants étaient encore très jeunes. Nous pouvions nous garer près du Mont, sur les sables. Maintenant, la nature a repris ses droits depuis la construction d'un pont qui relie le mont au continent. C'est ici, dans la baie du Mont-Saint-Michel que les plus grandes marée d'Europe ont lieu. No running either today, therefore we are on the road at 9:30 am and park our car in Beauvoir. A 4.5 km walk to get a progressive view on the Mont Saint-Michel. We had come here about 22 years with our kids who were very young. At the time, it was possible to park on the sands around the Mount. Now, with the construction of the bridge, it is an island again, just a bridge accessible on foot only links it to the continent. The largest tides of Europe happen in this bay.

Au milieu du 7e siècle, une première communauté d'ermites s'installe sur ce qui n'est encore que le Mont Tombe. Un siècle plus tard, l'évêque d'Avranches, Aubert, y fait édifier un sanctuaire en l'honneur de Saint-Michel. Desservi au départ par une douzaine de chanoines, le site va progressivement devenir l'un des plus grands centres de pèlerinage de l'Occident. Durant huit siècles, les moines d'une communauté bénédictine de l'abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel seront à la fois batisseurs, gestionnaires d'un immense domaine, copiste de précieux manuscrits. A la Révolution, les moines seront expulsés et les bâtiments transformés en prison jusqu'en 1863. In the middle of the 7th century, a first community of hermits settled on a rock in the bay simply known as Mont Tombe. One century later, Bishop Aubert of Avranches ordered the building of a shrine dedicated to St Michael there. Looked after at the outset by a dozen church canons, the place progressively grew into one of the biggest pilgrimage centers in Western Europe. For eight centuries, the monks of a Benedictine community would act as builders, managers of vasts estates and scribes of sumptuous manuscripts. At the French revolution, the monks were expelled and the buildings transformed into a prison until 1863.

Retour à notre gîte par Dol de Bretagne, juste le temps d'une petite promenade dans les petites rues - Going back to our guest house by Dol de Bretagne just for a short stroll in the narrow streets.

et Mont Dol Le Mont Dol culmine à 65 mètres et normalement (nous a-t-on dit) nous permet de profiter d'une très belle vue sur la baie du Mont Saint-Michel.... mais ce soir, la brume est tombée et nous ne pourrons absolument rien voir. On se console avec le très beau moulin à vent. And Mount Dol: Mount Dol is 65 meters high and we have been told that we would enjoy a splendid view over the bay of the Mont Saint-Michel... but tonight, just too much fog and no view for us. It's okay as we can see the beautiful windmill.
