Semaine 6 – Semaine spécifique vélo et retour aux allures Week 6 – Bike-Specific Week and a Return to Pace Work
A short nap in the afternoon to recover, then off to the pool at 4 p.m.: 800 meters, mostly focused on technique using the pull buoy.
Tuesday
6:30 p.m., heading to the Soulanges Canal for a training session with the Tri-Olacs club. I really don’t feel like going, but I know I’d regret staying home. So, I ignore the little voice in my head—and luckily, Alain is there to support me.
The weather feels stormy, but the session is still on: 1,600 meters on the schedule. Honestly, it’s getting better and better. I’m less afraid of the weeds, and I’m doing more freestyle than breaststroke now. The water is warmer, and I’m gradually getting used to the limited visibility. I’m proud of myself, even though I’m still far from the group’s pace!
Thursday
10 km run this morning, including 3 km at a 6:00/km pace and 3 km at 5:45/km. It’s still hot, but I push through. Alain is there, as reliable as ever. At the 6th kilometer, I have to stop to catch my breath — keeping the pace is tough. But the important thing is that I completed the workout.
In the evening, back to the Soulanges Canal for a swim. I’m exhausted and feel like I’m treading water. I hang on as best I can, focusing on freestyle. After 50 minutes, I get out of the water with 1,400 meters logged. Less than planned, but it’s still a decent session. I feel like I need some rest. Tomorrow will be an off day — no yoga or stretching.
I also realize I probably need to rethink my diet: I might be lacking slow-release carbs, which could explain this drop in energy.
Saturday – Brick workout
New combined session: 1 hour 30 minutes of cycling followed by 30 minutes of running at a 6:00/km pace. Perfect temperature, despite persistent soreness on my backside from the bike. Everything went well. Alain joined me once again, and we finished our 5 km run in just under 30 minutes.
We’re happy with the results. A short yoga session followed to stretch the muscles. Yesterday’s rest day did me a world of good—I regained a lot of energy. A nap is planned this afternoon before a technical swim session later in the day.
End of the day: Pool
As planned, back in the water to work on technique. A great way to close the day.
Pom s'est joint à moi et nous nous sommes filmés pour pouvoir nous critiquer. Bref, il y a du boulot pour qu'on s'améliore! Pom joined me, and we filmed ourselves so we could critique our technique. In short, there’s work to be done if we want to improve!
Les trois sports du jour sont faits ! Une journée de repos total bien méritée nous attend demain. Three sports done today! A fully earned rest day is coming tomorrow.
La 7e semaine d’entraînement est vraiment intense, avec une simulation partielle du triathlon. Elle commence fort : 16 km dès le lundi. Heureusement, la température est clémente (autour de 20°C) et Alain, ma meilleure moitié, m’accompagne. On tient l’allure, même si je flanche un peu au 8e kilomètre : petite pause pour m’alimenter et boire une gorgée. Rien de dramatique. Week 7 of training is seriously intense, with a partial triathlon simulation. It kicks off strong: 16 km on Monday. Thankfully, the weather is mild (around 20°C), and Alain—my better half—is running with me. We keep a steady pace, though I hit a bit of a wall at the 8 km mark: a quick snack and a sip of water get me going again. Nothing major.
Mardi, direction le canal. Ce n’est pas vraiment mieux, et je dois l’admettre : c’est un peu décourageant. Tout le monde me dépasse. Bon, je fais la distance, c’est l’essentiel, mais j’ai clairement l’impression de ne pas progresser. Alain, depuis la berge, me fait remarquer que les autres moulinent des bras à toute vitesse. Et c’est vrai que moi, à force d’essayer de me concentrer sur la technique, je nage en mode piano piano. Résultat : triceps en feu. Tuesday in the canal isn’t much better, and honestly, it’s a bit discouraging. Everyone is passing me. It’s not the end of the world—I’m covering the distance—but I really don’t feel like I’m making any progress. From the riverbank, Alain tells me others are furiously paddling their arms. And it’s true—while I’m focusing (maybe too much) on technique, I’m going at a slow, steady pace. The only thing I really feel... is my triceps burning.
La nuit suivante est mauvaise — super timing avant notre escapade à Montréal pour repérer les lieux du triathlon du 6 septembre. Mais le site est magnifique : le parc Jean-Drapeau, ses mosaïcultures, le bassin olympique, la piste de F1... Je me lance donc dans un mini triathlon : 800 m en eau libre (une première sans combinaison néoprène !), puis 45 minutes de vélo à fond, encouragée par Pompom. Je termine avec 5 km de course à pied, accompagnée par Alain. Il fait très chaud : 26°C avec un ressenti de 29. Je boucle tout ça en un peu moins de deux heures, transitions incluses. Épuisée... et un peu découragée. J’espérais être plus rapide à ce stade. Then a rough night’s sleep—great timing—before heading to Montreal to check out the triathlon venue for September 6. Mais bon, il reste encore presque deux mois pour progresser. Une leçon apprise (que je connaissais déjà, pourtant) : ne jamais partir trop vite à vélo. Mauvaise idée de vouloir suivre un jeune couple qui roulait à 29 km/h. J’ai tenu 5 km derrière eux, eux bavardaient tranquillement, moi je soufflais comme une locomotive. Résultat : jambes flinguées pour le reste du parcours. But hey, I’ve still got almost two months to improve. One clear takeaway—something I should already know—is not to go out too fast on the bike. I had the brilliant idea to try keeping up with a young couple cruising at 29 km/h. I held on for 5 km. They were chatting away, I was gasping like a maniac. Pretty sure I trashed my legs for the rest of the ride.
Aujourd’hui, j’ai dormi comme un bébé. Et ce matin, le moral est un peu remonté. Avec Pompom, 9 km de course à pied au programme, avec du fractionné en bonus. Ah oui, petit rituel : après chaque entraînement, je coche ma feuille de planification. Et ce matin, c’est avec un plaisir non dissimulé que j’ai coché Course à pied ! Today, I slept like a baby. And this morning, my spirits were a bit higher. Pompom and I went out for a 9 km run with some intervals thrown in. Oh, and one of my little habits: after each training session, I check off the activity on my planning sheet. And today, it was with real satisfaction that I ticked Run completed!
